The morning came, as it always does. Kiana packed up her things quickly and made her way downstairs, plopping into one of the cozy armchairs by the window. She was already on her second cup of coffee when Kristen and Marissa made it downstairs.

“You’re up early,” Kristen said. Then, noticing both Kiana and Jasmine’s bags on the floor, she mused, “And you’re ready to go.”

“I am,” Kiana sighed deeply.

“Well,” Marissa said uneasily. “You should know… we-we got a call this morning. I think they got our numbers wrong and Detective Murphy must have thought it was yours-”

“The point,” Kiana said through teeth that were gritted not in irritation with Marissa’s stalling, but rather with her own nerves. She braced herself for the worst.

“They found her clothes and her phone on the shore near Doolin,” Kristen said bluntly. “And they’ve declared it a suicide.”

Kiana closed her eyes and buried her head in her hands. The myths and legends that seemed almost possible over the past few days vanished instantly as the truth slapped her across the face with crippling sobriety.

She had wanted to hold onto the tiniest bit of hope she had in her heart despite her resignation at the abbey. Strange as it was, she felt closer to Jasmine now than she ever had, because only she would have related to this feeling of loss.
